This is the perfect time of year to plant trees in this part of the world. If you haven’t already met, can I introduce you to this stunner: Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ also known as Sweet Gum or American Gum.
It’s quite handsome for much of the year, but takes centre stage during October through to November when the leaves turn this magnificent fiery red/orange.
It eventually reaches 15-20 metres tall x 10 metres wide, so it isn’t suitable for small gardens.
It prefers damp, though not waterlogged soils, and will grow in sun or part-shade, but the best autumn colours are from those trees that are grown in sun.
