Ideally a tree is planted in the deep rich soil of a garden, but if your garden is on a roof or you want a tree but only have paving, a big plant pot is the only option.
A silver birch is a good tree to choose for container planting, it has a nice light canopy and a muliti-stemmed one like this won’t grow too tall.
It’s completed with cool, green and white planting of evergreen ferns, white geranium and daisy-like plants.
Not only do they look good, they’ll keep weeds at bay and stop the soil from drying out too quickly.
Hats off to the Alitex greenhouse people at The Chelsea Flower Show for this lovely display.
Practicalities:
- plant trees in containers with a compost mix that includes loam
- check possible weight issues if planting in a roof garden
- Geranium macrorrhizum is a vigorous grower, something more refined like Geranium clarkei Kashmir White would be better for long-term planting in containers.

Happy gardening, Jill
